Fire Shelters

About Fire Shelters

The Foundation’s top funding priority leading up to the 2020 wildfire season is emergency fire shelters.

These shelters provide protection from direct flame, reflect radiant heat, and trap breathable air within. The outer layer slows the passage of heat to the inside of the shelter by reflecting approximately 95 percent of radiant heat.

The inner layer is constructed of fiberglass laminated to aluminum foil which prevents heat from being re-radiated to the person inside the shelter

Similar fire shelters have been in use for several years. This latest iteration weighs less than 8 lbs. and deploys within seconds. Each shelter costs $343.

To help the LAFD Foundation reach its goal of securing the 1,800 individual fire shelters, please donate now!
